First Friday Fight Night

Please check the Schedule page to confirm dates for Fight Night; sometimes holidays or other events require us to move to another date.sabre fight

First Friday Fight Night is Northwest Fencing Academy’s monthly freeplay event, where we meet to try our skills at arms, socialize, and eat pizza and drink modest amounts of age-appropriate beverages afterwards. It’s usually held on the first Friday of the month.  All ages are welcome! (But minors do need to be accompanied by an adult to the restaurant.) Practice your skills at the weapon you normally study, or try out some work with one of the other weapons! All fights are supervised and we match people up by skill levels and experience.  Please read on for further information!

Guests

We welcome guests to our fight nights for a $10 floor fee. You’ll need to read and sign our policies and procedures and our waiver, just as regularly enrolled members do. We will check out your equipment to be sure it meets our requirements. Your first bouts will be supervised so that we can assess your levels of skill and control, and determine who it’s appropriate for you to spar with. Again, we do this within our school as well, so it’s not just something that applies to guests.

Inclusion and Anti-Discrimination Policy

Our mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of children, youth, men and women and our community in general, through the study of Historical European Martial Arts. We specifically prohibit discriminatory or harassing behavior based on race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnic or religious background, or ability, and we will respond quickly, seriously, and fairly to all forms of harassment, hate speech, or bullying.

We strive to create a physical environment where everyone can learn to respect one another; our martial arts school promotes a safe and supportive training space, where our students are assisted in achieving their highest potential in physical fitness, coordination, flexibility, endurance, mental clarity, and focus.

Minimum Equipment Requirements for Freeplay

Because protective equipment greatly lessens the natural fear instilled by sharps swords in an antagonistic fight, we actively work to minimize the amount of protective equipment worn and mazimize control of our actions (which is just good fencing, anyway). Some schools wear so much protective equipment that the weight and coverage of their kit approaches that of steel armour – at which point they should be practicing armoured fighting, not unarmoured fighting. Some schools tend to believe that a good hit is a hard – a very, very hard – hit. This treats the sword (a cutting and thrusting weapon) like a stick or a mace (blunt trauma weapons) and is historically inaccurate. Experienced students at Northwest Fencing Academy are capable of sparring safely and effectively with minimal equipment and all students should strive for this level of skill and control. However, we do have minimum kit requirements that must be met:

Required Sparring Equipment

• Gambeson or padded sparring jacket
• fencing mask with protection for the back of the head
• gorget for neck protection
• padded protective gloves
• elbow guards.
• All swords must have either a rolled/spatulated tip or a rubber or leather blunt.
